U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awards $600,000 to UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER FOUNDATION

Federal Grant Will Fund Renovation for Diabetes Clinic at University Medical Center

EL PASO, TX – (January 18, 2010) – Executive Director Dennece Knight announced the award of a grant to the University Medical Center Foundation in the amount of $600,000 from The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The funds will be used for the renovation of the annex at University Medical Center to include a Multi-Disciplinary Integrated Care Clinic for Diabetes and Obesity. The clinic will provide critical support for the new Paul L. Foster School of Medicine and its Center for Excellence for Diabetes and Obesity.

“Approximately 85,000 El Pasoans have diabetes,” Knight says, “and 25% more are undiagnosed or unaware that they have it. The proposed Multidisciplinary Care Clinic will provide a myriad of specialties for intervention related to the early detection, management, and complications of diabetes. We appreciate the effort of Congressman Silvestre Reyes, who worked diligently to secure this federal funding.”

The mission of the University Medical Center Foundation is to develop and support programs that promote the health, wellness and quality of life for all El Pasoans, to serve unmet needs, and to improve patient outcomes. The Health Resources and Services Administration is the primary Federal agency for improving access to health care services for people who are uninsured, isolated or medically vulnerable.
