5/27/2010 CMN donates forensic equipment to UMC Crime Victims' Services Unit

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EL PASO, TX – (May 26, 2010) – Dennece Knight, Executive Director of University Medical Center Foundation, announced that Children’s Miracle Network has donated a Secure Digital Forensic Imaging (SDFI®) System to the Crime Victims’ Services Unit at University Medical Center. The $21,500 system will be used by forensic nurses to collect evidence from patients who require a forensic exam or when sexual assault is suspected.

 

SDFI®-TeleMedicine system consists of a camera, which takes high-resolution secure digital photographs needed for forensic reports, and proprietary software that allows the encrypted images to be emailed directly to detectives, prosecutors, and other experts who need to handle digital evidence.

 

As a Level One Trauma Center, University Medical Center receives the majority of trauma patients from the Southwest region who may need the services of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) nurse. “Our thanks go to UMC Foundation,” said Susan Hass Hatch, Manager of the Crime Victim Services programs at UMC.  “The donation of this equipment provides is a significant advancement for the SANE program at UMC.  It will enable our Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners to better serve child and adult victims of sexual assault and interface with the law enforcement community.”  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1 in 4 girls is sexually abused before the age of 18, and 1 in 6 boys is sexually abused before the age of 18.
