5/28/2010 Six-year-old donates tooth fairy money and bake sale funds for children with cancer at UMC

EL PASO, TX – (May 28, 2010) – Board members of University Medical Center Foundation received a donation from a surprise guest at their recent board meeting.  Six-year-old Pilar Zavala presented $130.04 she raised through a family bake sale and money from the tooth fairy.

Pilar told her mother that she wanted to do something to help others.  “She felt called in her heart to raise money for sick children, so we began to have a conversation,” said Pilar’s mother, Prudence.  We talked about what charity means and how we use the simple gifts we are given to help those in need,” “We decided to do a bake sale so we sent out an email to family and friends.  We were very surprised at the quick response.”  They took orders for cupcakes and cookies which they delivered.  Pilar’s father, Victor Olivas, is a surgical resident at University Medical Center and suggested that they contact the Foundation for suggestions about how the money might be used.

“Pilar decided to make her donation to the fund benefitting children with cancer because she remembered that her great-grandmother had died of cancer, and she liked the idea of helping with games and toys for the kids” said Dennece Knight, Executive Director of University Medical Center Foundation.  “We think she sets a great example of heartfelt giving.”
