5/31/2013 UMC Foundation Awarded $50,000 Grant From The Coldwell Foundation To Purchase Medical Equipment To Treat Patients With Esophageal Cancer

University Medical Center Foundation received a $50,000 grant from the Lizanell and Colbert Coldwell Foundation, used to purchase medical equipment and supplies to support the Halo Ablation System to prevent Barrett's Esophagus in patients at risk of developing esophageal cancer.

The Halo System is a critical piece of equipment needed to perform endoscopic surgical procedures to remove lesions in the esophagus and help prevent the progression to esophageal cancer.

University Medical Center is the only facility with the Halo system in El Paso and gastroenterologist Dr. Mohamed Othman, M.D. is the only certified specialist to perform Halo procedures in the region, as a result patients with Barrett’s esophagus no longer have to go out of town for treatment and residents are trained in use of this equipment.
